Spring Meeting 1997

Action Items from Administrative Computing Folks

  1. Admin computing group should be online
  2. Look at applying for collaborative grants to look at organizational development
  3. Workshops on:
    data warehousing
    Access & security
    re-engineering issues
  4. [sic] Address customer relations issues

Action Items from Technology Support Folks

  1. Help us pick ISP's for dial-up and dedicated data circuits. It would be nice to have a NW-Heat contract that everyone could use instead of everyone fending for themselves.
  2. Have a workshop on Routing with a follow-up discussion session.
  3. Help solve the Portals authentication problem so Portals members can telnet from their ISP and be authenticated as being a Portals member. (For students and staff off campus.)
  4. Develop a web based help desk package that all the member universities could use. A common help desk package could keep statistics that could then be shared and compared between universities. There may also be a way to share the data between universities to create a large knowledge base.
  5. Help evaluate and purchase a new e-mail system. Maybe negotiate a license for all NW-Heat sites.
  6. Have a workshop on curriculum design. Maybe give Reed's new support person a chance to show the rest of us what they are doing.

Action Items from Network Folks

  • Have a seminar on understanding network statistics. Collect parallel statistics at each participating school.
  • Create a pool of expensive hardware available to all for checkout. E.G. Network General Sniffer, etc.
  • Universal contract that participating schools could use with ISPs or other vendors.
  • Seminar on security
  • Disaster recovery planning/co-operation
  • Each school put their network hardware descriptions onto a password protected web page so that we could consult each other as to problems, successes with different hardware.
